In a journal of his sail on the United States ship ''Ohio'', F. P. Torrey writes on February 22, 1841:


:Discharged and sent home in the ''Franklin'', or to Baltimore, John Williams, a Swede, and George Smith a negro, for a crime hardly ever committted, and as the officers of the ship would not disgrace the criminal calendar by trying them, I will not sully this page by describing it; but it would have been as well to make an example of the wretches.<ref>F.
