Hi, Houston! This entry is great. But note that the Jan 18, 1985 cartoon is blocking some of your text.

The Houston demonstration against Anita on June 16th, 1977 was, based on my research, not only the largest gay rights demonstration in world history (outside of the parades) and held the title for a week until the Hillsbourough demonstrations in San Fran, but possibly, along with Chicago's demonstration on June 14th 1977 which held the world title for 2 days, was as important as Stonewall. It shocked the world when the heartland rose up against Anita and revitalized the entire national gay movement. And this is just wingnut speculation, but there is some evidence that the Houston demo of June 16th 1977 caused the religious right to rethink a planned coup d'etat. It certainly put a crimp in their plans.
