*[http://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/ws/index.php?pid=29613 Democratic National Party Platform, 2004] Under “A Strong American Community” - regarding LGBT rights the platform states: “We will enact the bipartisan legislation barring workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation. We are committed to equal treatment of all service members and believe all patriotic Americans should be allowed to serve our country without discrimination, persecution, or violence… We support full inclusion of gay and lesbian families in the life of our nation and seek equal responsibilities, benefits, and protections for these families. In our country, marriage has been defined at the state level for 200 years, and we believe it should continue to be defined there. We repudiate President Bush's divisive effort to politicize the Constitution by pursuing a "Federal Marriage Amendment." Our goal is to bring Americans together, not drive them apart.”

Below is a collection of sources that were used as documentation to support the History of the Alice B. Toklas Democratic Club 1971-2004 Exhibit, and the sources are organized in a timeline from 1966 to the present. Special thanks to the GLBT Historical Society of Northern California for preserving the Alice Reports Newsletters and many other documents below.

1969-1971

  • In The Life Media. June, 2009. State of the Movement www.inthelifetv.org/html/episodes/74.html. Narration by Michael Billy. Video, 1969 Stonewall Riots discussed in the context of Stonewall's meaning for the LGBT Civil Rights Movement the following forty years.

1972

  • Democratic National Party Platform, 1972 The "Gay Plank" which Jim Foster proposed was removed. The only language the Democratic Party left that remotely relates to homosexuality was under “The Right to be Different” section, and says “Americans should be free to make their own choice of life-styles and private habits without being subject to discrimination or prosecution.”
  • Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club. Alice Reports, September, 1972. Pg 3 The third page of the first issue of Alice Reports, Newsletter for the Alice B. Toklas Memorial Democratic Club. Reprints letters originally printed in the Village Voice, from Presidential Candidate George McGovern in response to a speech made by Kathleen Wilch at the Democratic National Convention opposing the 'gay rights plank'.
  • Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club. Alice Reports, September, 1972. Pg 4 The forth page of the first issue of Alice Reports, Newsletter for the Alice B. Toklas Memorial Democratic Club. Editorial from Alice Club President Jim Foster criticizing Gay Activist Alliance 'zap' of George McGovern. A beginning to a long dialogue within LGBT advocates about activism versus pragmatism in politics.
