The first use of the phrase “heterosexual identity” appeared in The New York Times on December 10, 1972, in a report about the responses of the all-male cast of an amateur theater company in Yorktown Heights, Westchester County, New York, to putting on a production of The Boys in the Band.
- Most of the actors stress their real-life heterosexual identity when they greet the audience after each performance and in their references to their wives and children in the program notes.[1]
