Jäger first publicly uses the term heterosexual

by Jonathan Ned Katz

Karl-Maria Kertbeny's word heterosexual was used publicly for the first time, in Germany, in 1880, in a book titled Discovery of the Soul, by a zoologist, Gustav Jäger. Earlier, Kertbeny had contributed a chapter to the book arguing for the decriminalization of homosexuality, but the book's publisher decided it was too controversial and omitted it. Nevertheless, Jäger used Kertbeny's terminology elsewhere in the book.[1]
