Following on the growing success of gay male beauty contests such as the Groovy guy contest the leather community started holding their annual contest in Chicago called the Mr. Gold Coast contest.
In 1979 the contest was changed to the International Mr. Leather (or IML) contest. It is held annually in Chicago.
