LGBT social spaces are probably more defined by their flux than their continuity. The number of bars, restaurants, shops and organizations that have come into existence, burned bright, and then faded away far exceeds the number that have remained constant year after year. Indeed, it is no doubt the rarity of the long-lasting institutions that makes them so significant. NEXT Magazine in New York has just published a Manhattan map showing the local haunts that closed their doors for a final time during the last decade. It's an impressive collection of places that, for a time, seemed like permanent fixtures. And yet, time rolls along. Take a look and make sure you enlarge it! |
