Has operated from 1967 to the present. It was located in New York City from 1967 - 1971, Los Angeles from 1972 - 2003 and San Francisco from 2003 to the present.

In New York City during 1967 Illustrator / Graphic Designer Jim French (aka: Rip Colt, Lüger, Colt) and Lou Thomas (aka: Jon Target) joined to form Colt Studio. Together they market photography, illustrations and produce a line of publications that include: Manpower! and Gallery. State of Man Productions is also introduced at this time. They also start to produce 8mm Film loops marketed under the Colt Studio name. in 1972 French and Thomas part ways. Thomas remained in New York to start Target Studios while French moved to Los Angeles. After moving to LA French expands the publications, photography and films offered he also introduces the additional brand of Buckshot to handle the emergence of the video market in the late seventies.

Colt Studio is sold to John Rutherfordin 2003, formerly of Falcon Studios in 2003 and the studio relocates to San Francisco
