Watauga County's LGBT life outside of Appalachian State University was fairly barren until the mid-1990s.  Friends met at dinners, parties, and softball games; however, the first county-based LGBT organization was not created until 1989.  The following two decades saw the creation of LGBT groups, which for the most part did not flourish until in 2004 Boone Pride was formed.

Watauga County's LGBT life outside of Appalachian State University was fairly barren until the mid-1990s.
