"Curative" Rape

Recent news articles have addressed the frequency of rape against lesbian women and transgender people in South Africa, intended to "cure" them of their homosexuality or non-cornforming gender identity.[1] Does "curative" rape against lesbians have a history here in the US? Does it happen today?
