Later, Winston would tell me that the original thirteen, joined by Seth Heller, Bobby Henderson and John Hooper, left the building to picket in a circle outside the Champaign Police Station shouting, "Free Reggie and Dave," "Pass the gay rights bill now," and "Remember the Wigwam." Not long afterwards, a television van, a newspaper reporter and photographer showed up to conduct interviews; Steve spoke on television and was excellent as always. That was a refreshing change. Over the previous few months, local news coverage of the fight for gay civil rights had all but disappeared.
