The bar was legally represented by Attorney Walter Nelson, who in 1977 recalled the owners presenting their business model to the Grand Avenue Business Association, before it turned. Two options were offered. The space would either have a black clientele, or become a gay bar. Apparently the gay bar concept won "hands down," so he said.
