Lipsky, William. Gay and Lesbian San Francisco. Foreward by Tom Ammiano. Charleston: Arcadia, 2006. The only history of gays and lesbians in San Francisco from the Gold Rush to the present. From vaudeville performers such as Ella Wesner and Bothwell Browne to eminent 19th century authors such as Charles Stoddard to pioneering human rights leaders such as Phyllis Lyon and Del Martin, the current gay and lesbian generations of San Francisco has had many decades of preeminent precedessors. Thanks to their efforts and those of others in the recent and distant past, San Francisco opened the door for gay causes and unashamed celebration of gay and lesbian life, art, and culture.
