Los Angeles Times obituary from Feb. 19, 1997. It should be noted that Slater had no middle name. When he tired of his colleagues teasing him about this, he told Dorr Legg [aka William Lambert] in jest that his middle name was Rutherford and was thus often referred to in Legg's business correspondence. Slater seemed to never attempted to correct the matter.
