Gay hotels appeared in major U.S. cities in the 1960's to cater to the newly emerging GLBT market. At that time all gay people could be discriminated against in all major hotel chains as well as small mom and pop operations. In the early days of gay liberation they served as a safe space for GLBT persons to stay when in an unfamiliar town and to meet members of the community. Some of the most popular were the Marlin Beach Hotel. In Los Angeles it was the Coral Sands.
