Since at least the 1940s unsubstantiated rumors have circulated that j. Edgar Hoover was homosexual.[1]

“I emphatically deny that I have at any time under any circumstances ever said or remotely suggested that Mr. Hoover was a homosexual,” [reporter Jack] Nelson wrote [to Hoover] on Oct. 19, 1971.[2]
