History of OutHistory.org

In the mid-1980s<check>, while working as secretary to the contract director of Scholastic, a major educational publisher, Katz first learned to use a computer, and fantasized that this huge, multi-floor office was actually a "gay history factory," and that the hundreds of people working busily in cubicles were actually historians digging up forgotten bits of the LGBTQ past. The present LGBTQ history website is the realization of Katz's history factor dream.

In 2003, a friend of Katz's, Barbara xxxxxxx, who worked at Mediapolis, a website development company, introduced him to Mediapolis founder and director Carl Pritzkat, and Katz broached the possibility of this company creating, pro bono, a website on LGBTQ history. Prtizkat suggested the name OutHistory.org and began developing the site.

In 2004 <check>, while Katz was teaching at Yale University, the first version of OutHistory.org went on line, featuring a detailed and original biography of an early, forgotten Yale major donor, the lawyer John William Sterling and his live-in companion of 40 years, James Bloss. (That biography now appears on the present OutHistory.org.)

In 2005 <check>, a grant of $5,000 from the Funding Exchange facilitated by program officer Marcia Gallo through the generosity of the late Joan R. Heller and her partner, Dr. L. Diane Bernard, encouraged Katz to investigate the various commercial and non-commercial ways to go about founding such a site.

Katz was also encouraged to formulate an agenda to discuss the development of the site and called a meeting of interested people. About a dozen people, mostly archivists, met at his house on February 4, 2006. Richard Wandell, founder and director of the National Museum and Archive of Lesbian and Gay History <check>, in New York City, ended a long and useful discussion by suggesting that Katz needed to draft a complete vision statement for the website.

Katz wrote a vision statement and submitted it to the Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies, then directed by Paisely Currah. The CLAGS board voted to support the project for two years if funding for it could be secured. Before the CLAGS board voted, Katz met with Urvashi Vaid, director of the Arcus Foundation, discussed the website proposal, and received an encouraging response. Katz drafted a proposal to Arcus and Sara Ganter, then the development director of CLAGS redrafted it and submitted it to Arcus. That foundation approved a grant of $50,000 a year for two years (2007-2008) to develop the site.

CLAGS hired a first Project CoordinatorIn for the site, James Arnette, and in June 2007 an OutHistory advisors meeting was attended by xxxx people. After investigating various website development companies CLAGS hired Cidamon.com to do that work, and the present prototype is the result.

MERRYMOUNT About 1626, according to William Bradford, Thomas Morton and the other male settlers at Merrymount were guilty of "great licentiousness." The men's consorting with Indian women is mentioned, along with "worse practices" associated with ancient Roman feasts. Bradford said that Morton and his men "set up a maypole,drinking and dancing about it many days together, inviting the Indian women for their consorts, dancing and frisking together like so many fairies, or furies, rather; and worse practices. As if they had anew revived and celebrated the feasts of the Roman goddess Flora, or the beastly practices of the mad Bac-' chanalians." Subject for research: It would be interesting to know just what feasts and "beastly practices" Bradford had in mind; see his Of Plymouth Plantation, pp. 204-06; Oaks, 'Things Fearful,' " p. 269.

Alphabetize category entries by last name You simply add this snippet of text above the category: {{DEFAULTSORT:Kolbe, Jim}}

Let me just mention that the link text donesn't necessarily need to be the same as the article title. I can link to Jim Kolbe's article for example by typing [[Jim Kolbe|Jim Kolbe's article]] (text before vertical bar is what it links to, text after the vertical bar is what it says on the page). You can also automatically sign your name when you write something on the discussion pages (like I did below) by typing four tilde characters (~~~~). The will turn into a signature stamp when you save or preview.

Hello and welcome to OutHistory.org.

Thank you signing up and contributing to the project. Here are a couple of things you may find helpful as you navigate your way through the site:

  • First, we suggest that you set up the correct time zone for yourself by visiting the preferences page. This will allow you see when articles have been posted and edited according to your local time, rather than Greenwich Mean Time. Click on the "Date and time" tab and simply click on the "Fill in from the browser" button to determine your time zone automatically. You can also set other useful defaults on the preferences page.
  • Next, try editing your own user page to tell others a bit about yourself and get familiar with editing. You can access your user page by clicking on your username on the top of the sidebar.
  • Each user on OutHistory has a user page and a talk page. Use your and others talk pages for discussion and communication. Just like on Wikipedia, it's a standard practice to indent your paragraphs one level further when engaging in a discussion. Type a single or multiple colons before each of you paragraphs to indent text (::Like this). Sign your edits automatically by typing four tilde characters (~~~~). If your discussion concerns a single article, edit that article's discussion page instead.
  • Finally, for advanced editing see editing help and above all, experiment on the sandbox page rather than a real article page.
