He moved to New York City and worked for a while as a window dresser. Later on he moved back to Chicago and worked as a bartender in several places around town.

Dugan was a supporter of many GLBT organizations, such as Gay Horizons (precursor of Center on Halsted)[1] and the HRC. In 1974 he invested in the Marlin Beach Hotel in Fort Lauderdale.
