LGBTQ Life in Tippecanoe County, Indiana: 1969-2009

Over the past 40 years, LGBTQ community in Tippecanoe County, Indiana has evolved into a thriving, influential part of the local population. The Stonewall Riots caused little change in Tippecanoe County. Organizing in Tippecanoe County was centered around the presence of Purdue University and civil rights issues in the early 1990's. Although much has changed since the community begin to organize in Tippecanoe County, acts of discrimination and lack of visibility still persist.

Timeline:

-19?? - First gay bar opens in Lafayette

-197? - First LGBTQ organization founded at Purdue University

-1993 - Citizens for Civil Rights was founded

-1998 - First group of Tippecanoe County LGBTQ volunteers host booth at a pride festival in Indianapolis

-2000 - Pride Lafayette Yahoo Group initiated

-2001 - Purdue University amends non-discrimination policy to include sexual orientation

-2002 - Pride Lafayette begins to organize

-2003 - Pride Lafayette, Inc. is founded

-2003 - Pride Lafayette Community Center opens its doors at 646 Main St., Lafayette

-2004 - Pride Lafayette Community Center opens its new location at 658 Main St., Suite 218, Lafayette

-October 11, 2008 - OUToberfest '08, Tippecanoe County's first pride festival takes place on Main St. in Lafayette

-May 30, 2009 - Pride Lafayette Community Center opens its new location at 640 Main St., Lafayette
