I first met Edward Field in, I think, 1972, when he came up to my apartment in Hell's Kitchen. I was hosting a meeting of a post-GLF organization I wanted to call Gay Radicals Coalition. It never took off, but I was very impressed with Ed. When I asked him what he did, he answered, "I'm a poet." I loved that.
We were never close, but I admired him greatly, and have loved reading this account of his life. He is a remarkable and beautiful example of his generation of men, especially gay men in the arts, which shaped our own. I am happy that he achieved a degree of balance and strength necessary not only for his survival, but for his happiness and our own.
