He had travelled to Dubbo to take part in a range of 'personal appearances' with teammate Isaiah Tass during his injury layoff, with the photo leaked shortly afterward.

Daily Mail Australia is not suggesting there were any illicit substances involved.

However the South Sydney board is worried about its return on investment after signing the representative star to a bumper five-year deal in 2022. 

Mitchell has not spoken publicly since the image was made public, but made a brief statement to media after fronting the Souths board. 

'I just had a good yarn to them,' Mitchell said.

'No comment we will leave it with the board and go from there leave it with them and get home to my family now.'

'Just leave me alone at my house please.' 

When pressed on whether there would be further sanctions, possibly including behavioural clauses added to his contract, Mitchell remained tight lipped. 

'To be honest I don't really know, we will just leave it there, aye,' he said. 

Mitchell later took to social media to issue a public apology, insisting he wanted to 'do better'. 

 'Sometimes in life you make poor decisions and I have accepted that I as a man/family man/Club man ... I want to do better,' he wrote on Instagram. 

'I can take this time now to move forward look ahead and continue on being the best version of myself.

'Love to all that has supported me through this. Very grateful.'

Master coach Wayne Bennett will be returning to Redfern next season after the club sacked Jason Demetriou earlier this year.

While Mitchell is out of the moon boot from his latest injury setback, interim coach Ben Hornsby confirmed before the club's loss to Wests on the weekend that fans had seen the last of the star fullback for this season.

'He won't play footy again this year,' Hornby said. 

'He's missed two weeks of training because he was sick last week, so he won't get back, conditioning-wise. 

'It's a bit of everything, but he's missed two weeks of training, so you can't get that back.' 

Australian coach Mal Meninga has also ruled Mitchell out for the end-of-season Pacific Championships against New Zealand and Tonga.

'At this stage we're unsure where Latrell is. But I don't think he has probably played enough games and in a good headspace to be in contention,' Meninga said.
