In The New York Times Book Review, critic Louis Kronenberger described the subject of Andre Gide's novel The Immporalist as proceeding "from a heterosexual liaison to a homosexual one."
The ability to slip between the hetero and homo categories was referred to rather casually as one human possibility.
This is one of the earliest uses in The Times of the hetero/homo binary. (For an earlier usage of both terms see: ???????.)[1]
