The Police Gazette, published in New York City, contains three reports of sex between men.
A story headed "Sodomy among the Israelites," involves an African American alleged "sodomite," William Coles, and an accusing young Jewish man, B. S. De Young. Police Gazette, page 363.
A second story headed "Another Abominable Attempt," involves a Spaniard, Antoine Lears, accused of trying to have intercourse with a fifteen-year-old, John Martin.
In a third story head, "More Bestiality! -- Charge of Conspiracy," Theron Wilbur, a merchant charged Gilbert Farr and John Learry with extorting money from him.[1]

Research Request: The threat was apparently to say that Wilbur had committed a sexual act upon one of the other men, but of this Katz is not sure. All of these references were discovered by the late Michael Lynch who wrote to Jonathan Ned Katz about them on October 29, 1979. At that date, these were the earliest references to sex between men that Lynch had found in the Gazette.
