Responding to Times story of March 10, Humm and Norhrop says that story

doesn’t explain that marriage is already open to same-sex couples in New York and that thousands are legally married here. They all went to other states and countries to get married, and our courts and state government have recognized them as married for all purposes, public and private, in decisions going back to 2004.

. . .there is no antigay “defense of marriage” law in New York even though our recalcitrant State Senate refuses to open our state’s marriage bureaus to them. . . .

2011, March 9

Governor Andrew Cuomo meets with gay advocates of same-sex marriage, saying he will give the cause his "full attention" this coming spring.

Richard Socarides, president of the gay rights group Equality Matters, who participated in the hour-long meeting inthe Capitol, said:

This meeting was intended to send a statement directly from the governor that this state is going to lead on this issue -- and he is going to lead it.

In a sign of Mr. Cuomo’s determination to be closely engaged, he will assign his most senior aide, Steven M. Cohen, to oversee the administration’s efforts on the issue.
