One of the letter writers noted on this subject was called the "female historian of colonial times", wife of a Senator - and more well known than her husband. I'm not sure why the contempory reports are dismissed. There was certainly cross dressing occuring in Philadelphia at the time of Hydes' visit there - arrest records for Mumming attest to that. Though, there's no need to assume the behavoir was related to same sex intimacy.

Not sure who you are referring to when you speak of "the female historian of colonial times." Can you provide an exact source?
