Jonathan Ned Katz comments: As far as I can recall the slogan "How Dare You Presume I'm Heterosexual", challenging the presumption of heterosexuality, was coined in the late 1970s in New York City by Gay Activist Alliance member Jay Michael Siegelaub, and produced as a button by him. Seeing the button then, I remember saying to Jay that "No one ever presumed I was heterosexual, so the button's not relevant to me." In retrospect, the slogan's challenge to heterosexual presumption made a valid political point, relevant, for instance, to the assumption that everyone in history is straight and normal until proven otherwise.
