Hello Jonathon Ned Katz, Tom Weaver in Minnesota here. In a file of mine, I just found a letter Feb 2, 1989 to you to the Advocate IN LA about Evangline Whipple. I was raised in Faribault MN in the Cathedral founded by Whipple and I have a lesbian Cousin, Betty Eicher who was a lesbian in Lakeland FL after 1949. I sent a cc to Paul Petrick in Orono as well. THanks for your fun scholarship.

1/30/1890 Tampa Journal--West Coast Department, pg 1, col1 describes the author Lucie Vannevar's stay at Pine Crest Inn in Paola, FL, where Mrs. Simpson, her brother Mr. Mars (sic) and mother stayed. Rose Cleveland was also a guest. A veiled allusion to possible lesbian activity is noted in a statement near the bottom of this column. Supposedly a photo of the group was taken near the St. John's river on an outing.
