About the National Jukebox

The Library of Congress presents the National Jukebox, which makes historical sound recordings available to the public free of charge. The Jukebox includes recordings from the extraordinary collections of the Library of Congress Packard Campus for Audio Visual Conservation and other contributing libraries and archives.

On May 21, 2011, Jonathan Ned Katz, co-director of OutHistory.org, wrote to the National Jukebox

As a historian of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) history, and a co-director of OutHistory.org, the website on the subject, I hope that you will include and help users find recordings made by female and male impersonators, a particular genre of vaudeville performance. Other material by LGBT performers should also be tagged as such, including recordings by Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey, and composer Tony Jackson.
