[[Comment::3/3/11 Dear Joe, Will and I offer you our deepest sympathy and compassion on the passing of your precious mate, Herb. Your loss must be so very difficult to bear, and we hope our message of love for you both will make it a little less. I (Jim) met Herb in the crowd of gay people on 13th Street attending the opening ceremonies of the Gay and Lesbian Community Center. He introduced himself and disclosed that he was an ardent reader and admirer of my early AIDS columns in The New York Native. We became friends from that initial meeting and have remained so for the last 28 years. Herb worked side by side with me on GMHC’s first Safer Sex Program called “The 800 Men Project” which was designed to make safer sex attractive and popular at the beginning of the epidemic. Herb organized and implemented a wonderful “Safer Sex Calendar” for the project with highly artistic and original photographs using volunteers from the gay community: his friends and mine, now all gone on. The calendar turned out magnificently and our study analysis showed it was quite effective. As we all know, Herb was a brilliant, highly-educated, renaissance man with a brave and daring spirit. I can’t count the many stimulating conversations we shared, or the many parties I attended at his loft home. He created around him a circle of gay intellects and friendships worthy of Gertrude and Alice. And most wonderfully, Herbene had a fabulous sense of humor and fun; I will never forget his drag persona, Lucy Fur. For my partner of 26 years, Will Wake, and for me, Herb was a dear friend who holds an important place in our life stories. The last time we saw him was May 30, 2010 when he and you attended our 25th anniversary celebration. Afterwards, you both came to our home with a few other friends and spent several very happy hours together with us talking and laughing. We hold that time together a life treasure. Life will be much less without Herb. We will never forget him. May He Rest in Peace. Joe, please know that we hold you in the same warmly esteemed place that Herb held in our hearts; and please let us know how we can be a consolation and a source of help for you in the future. With Sincerest Love, Jim D’Eramo & Will Wake NYMEDED@AOL.com 212 864-6743]]
