Gay and Lesbian Bars in Wisconsin, 1969-2010

Wisconsin has held a diverse collection of Gay and Lesbian bars in the years since Stonewall. Milwaukee especially has always hosted a large number of gay bars at any point in time; an unusually large quantity of bars compared to other American cities of comparable or even larger size. (For example, at this point in time, Milwaukee has over 20 gay and lesbian bars. The bars are usually smaller than bars in other cities, offering diversity rather than size.) Madison, as the state capitol and a vibrant college town as well, has also hosted a large number of bars over the years. Green Bay is next, followed by a fair size number of bars in other larger cities throughout the state.

This page attempts to list all of the gay and lesbian bars known to have existed throughout Wisconsin since Stonewall (1969-2010)- with city, address, and years in which the bar are known to have been open. We know there are some inaccuracies in the list (in some cases, dates are estimates), and we know some bars are not listed (people often remember the name of a bar, but we have no documentation of address or dates of operation, and so are not included here). Any information to fill in gaps is most welcome.
