Profiled below are some of the brave men and women who helped to launch the homosexual rights movement in the United States in the pre-gay era. While not all self-identified as homosexual, gay, or lesbian, all openly advocated on behalf of homosexual rights in an age where to do so was dangerous, highly detrimental to one’s livelihood and career.
This exhibit will strive to be as comprehensive as possible, and to that aim we encourage comments and submissions from those knowledgeable in the field.
